An early attempt in prefabricated homes was first made in the 1950's when Frank Lloyd Wright created prefab kit houses for Marshall Erdman & Associates. The houses were however too expensive, and only 11 were made.
Here is a vintage photo of a Frank Lloyd Wright prefab I found in the book House Construction Details 1959, by Nelson Burbank.

"The exterior is made of hardboard with horizontal battens. It has double-coursed asphalt roofing for attractive design."
